What does FFP1 FFP2 and FFP3 mean?

FFP type respirator are classified according to three levels of protection according to EU standards.
The FFP1 level filters at least 80% of the airborne particles. For protection against the COVID-19 the minimal recommended protection level is FFP2 (EN 149-2001).
FFP2 has a filter efficiency of at least 94% and FFP3 has an efficiency of at least 99%.

What does KN95 or N95 mean?

N95 (NIOSH-42CFR84) and KN95 (GB2626-2006) are respectively the US and Chinese standards. Both N95 and KN95 have a filter efficiency of at least 95%. This makes them equivalent or even better than FFP2 which has an efficiency of 94%.

What is the difference between a surgical mask and a FFP2/KN95 respirator?

Surgical masks are designed to filter the exhaled air and prevent spreading of saliva. In order to guarantee a sterile environment during an surgical operation, the medical staff wears this type of mask to prevent saliva from spreading.

It is important to note that wearing a surgical mask is much safer than not wearing any kind of mask.
